About This Item

This is a handsome set of "The Ingenious Gentleman DON QUIXOTE of La Mancha" (complete in four volumes) together with "Miguel de Cervantes ~ His Life and Works" by Henry Edward Watts (complete in one volume). 1895; Adam and Charles Black; London. Don Quixote has been translated into English by Watts. "A New Edition with Notes, Original and Selected." The "Life of Cervantes" volume has a frontispiece portrait of Cervantes with facsimile handwriting. This set has been beautifully custom bound by "MacDonald - New York" (presumably James MacDonald, a Scottish bookbinder who came to the United States in 1873 and established his own business in New York in 1880). The volumes are bound in three-quarter leather with marbled covers and end papers, gilt lettering and decorations on the spines, gilt top page edges, and five raised bands on the spines.

Condition:
Light tanning at the top edge of the covers. Wear/rubbing to the leather along the edges of the spines. Small bits of leather have chipped away at various places on the spines (see photos). Some of the cover corners have wear. A small bit of the top leather layer has peeled away at the top-right corner of the volume 1 back cover. Some pages are still attached at the outer edge. All volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. All covers are firmly attached. Nice interiors - the pages are clean and nearly appear unread with no notable issues found. Bright gilt top page edges. each front pastedown has an old bookplate affixed. Overall the set is in Very Good condition.
