First serialised in 1837, they became an immediate success and remained popular through the nineteenth century. Featuring the poem 'The Jackdaw of Rheims,' as well as early transcriptions of the song 'A Flanklyn's Dogge.'With a colourful frontispiece and other colour plates by H. G. Theaker, first thus.Featuring P.T.S. Mountain View Johannesburg prize bookplate awarded to R. N. Seeman in 1922. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Small, light scratch to lower front panel, light rubbing to joints, very tip of upper left spine tip missing (barely apparent), else fine and bright with hinge firm. Original cloth bound in at rear. In custom mylar cover.. Full blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf with spine titled in gilt and front panel stamped to replicate the trade cloth binding. First published in 1898 this edition is a larger format and with additional illustrations.
