London: Faber and Faber, 1955. First Edition. First printing. 12mo (19cm). Original blue cloth, with pictorial dust jacket; plain endpapers; [viii], 11-233pp; publisher's blurbs to rear flap. Sound, lightly cocked, lower front board gently bent, lower f.f.e.p. crinkled, minor dampstain to extreme margin of rear f.e.p., else clean: Good. Jacket unclipped (priced 12s 6d), moderately faded, rubbed and toned at edges with a few short tears, splits along spine folds neatly stabilized with archival tape, dampstaining to lower edge, but largely whole: Good. Golding's second novel after Lord of the Flies, dealing with the extinction of one of the last tribes of Neanderthals.
Synopsis
The Inheritors is a story of eight Neanderthals who encounter Homo sapiens for the first time. The humans view the Neanderthals as Forest Devils and are quick to kill them when they can. Eventually, all the Neanderthals are killed, except for two small children that are taken captive and treated like pets.
