Nobel Prize winner, Sir William Gerald Golding (1911 - 1993), English novelist, playwright, and poet, is best known for his first novel, Lord of the Flies (1954). The Inheritors (1955) is his second novel, and said to be his personal favorite. On the beginning of mankind. Story of the demise of the last remaining Neanderthals at the hands of the more advanced, sophisticated (and malevolent) Homo sapiens. Narrated by Neanderthal Lok, whose life we follow as the adults of his tribe either die off or are killed, and the young are stolen by a group of early modern humans --- those godlike cunning creatures with mastery of fire, ability to ride waters on logs, and whose sticks inflict harm.

Synopsis

The Inheritors is a story of eight Neanderthals who encounter Homo sapiens for the first time. The humans view the Neanderthals as Forest Devils and are quick to kill them when they can. Eventually, all the Neanderthals are killed, except for two small children that are taken captive and treated like pets.
