About This Item
LONDON: CHATTO AND WINDUS, 1932 Blue Buckram Boards with gilt titles to spine, 205 x 145 mm approx. xii + 294 pp. Frontis b/w photo + 5 other illustrations all as called for. The author's mildly amusing and interesting diary covering the period from 1922 to 1930 of his time at the Spreadeagle Hotel at Thame, Oxfordshire where he is credited as starting the trend for high standards of food and service in English country hotels. The book has become a classic in it's field, being re published by the folio society and even the subject of a BBC play. The author states in his introduction to the 4th impression that a nameless friend has purged it of innumerable errors. Tipped in is a note that he has now taken over the Royal Ascot Hotel which he seeks to picture with the same pigments viz desirable people, staff, furniture, decoration, food, drink and garden. Good no d/j (Book- moderate shelf wear with some fading to spine. No notable soiling. Previous owner name and address in ink to front paste down. The book block is of a pleasing laid paper. No notable defects). Please see our images of the actual book offered for sale.
