About This Item
Extremely rare first Australian edition of Roughing It, appearing under Twain's "provisional title," Innocents at Home. Consisting of two parts, "Roughing It" and "The Pacific Coast," the text of the latter appears in chapters 46-79 of the American and English editions of Roughing It. According to editor Paul Baender, when composing Roughing It, Twain "incorporated several passages from letters to the Sacramento Union (1866), from sketches in the Buffalo Express (1869-1870), and from a sketch in the Galaxy (1871)." The sketches from the Buffalo Express constitute the text found in "The Pacific Coast" section of this volume.
OCLC records only five copies held in libraries worldwide, with UC Berkley being the only American library holding it at present.
Not in Johnson or BAL.
