Covers heavily edgeworn and scuffed, with rubbing especially to corners and some chips and smudging to paper over boards. Front hinge cracked but binding secure. Dampstain affecting top half of first 20 and last 30 or so pages, with some associated rippling. Very occasional marginalia in an old hand along top margins of a few pages. Balfour was a Scottish-born Universalist, who in this controversial book seeks "to examine the foundation on which the doctrine of endless misery is built" and "the fact or the falsehood that a place called hell...is prepared for the punishment of the wicked."
