About This Item

Lugduni batavorum (Holland): Vander Aa, 1656. First edition. This scarce volume is an early treatise on menstruation. Dr. Walter Charleton (1619-1707) was physician to Charles II and an early fellow of the Royal Society. At one time he was president of the College of Physicians. It is noted that, "His early work in natural philosophy was pioneering in its day, and is known to have been an important influence on greater thinkers, such as Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton" (ODNB). As a writer he published medical, philosophical and antiquarian tracts, as well as a zoological work.

12mo, (8) 204pp. Original vellum binding darkened, black title on spine indistinct. Internally little dusty with an abrasion affecting a couple of words on page 119 near the margin. Front free end paper has a signature at the top, presumably of the original owner, Jos. Robinson, Lichfield 1755. At that time Litchfield was a thriving community that had a few hospitals including one dedicated to women known as "Dr Milley's Hospital".

Overall a nice copy in good + condition. Wing C3680; LC RG163; OCLC 14304557 cites 9 copies.
