About This Item

Bruxelles: Henry Kistemaeckers, 1887. Early Reprint. Leather. Very Good. 8vo. Pp. iv, [2], 348. Marbled endpapers. Half morocco-grained calf over patterned boards with spine lettered in gilt, along with gilt decoration and raised bands. Original wrappers preserved. Silk bookmark bound in. Slight wear to binding: spine a bit faded; with light, stray foxing. Withal, a handsome, presentable copy. Inscribed by Bonnetain on the ffep. An early printing of the "Edition Augmentée" inscribed by Bonnetain on the front free endpaper to Henry Céard (1851-1924) who remains best known as the author of two novels Une Belle Journée (1881) and Terrains à Vendre au Bord de la Mer (1906). A close friend of Zola and de Maupassant, he was a member of the Académie Goncourt.

Bonnetain's "celebrated and epic masturbation novel" (Kearney), "a romance of masturbation, gross but exceedingly well and even powerfully written" (Bibliotheca Arcana), originally published in 1882 and an immediate scandal upon its release: Bonnetain was indicted under Artlcle 28, l'outrage aux bonnes moeurs, of France's massive 1881-82 recodification of its laws governing the press. A jury, however, acquitted him of the charge of obscenity.

On the surface, Bonnetain's novel would be deemed erotica for its frank treatment of onanism, but in fact the novel achieves much more as a dark study of sexual transgression. Quite scarce in all early editions; signed copies exceedingly rare. Please see KEARNEY, Private Case pp. 267-68; ROSE, 570. BIBLIOTHECA ARCANA 398. KEARNEY, History of Erotic Literature, p. 141. CRAIG, Banned Books of England, p. 184.
