Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1934]. First edition, First Issue, with the tipped in errattum slip as called for. 8vo, publisher’s original black polished cloth lettered on the spine in gilt. IN THE SCARCE FIRST ISSUE DUSTJACKET, with the $2.50 price and with “Recent Fiction” on the back cover. 301pp. A fine copy, pristine and unused, the varnished black cloth shiny and fresh with only a tiny amount of marking that is common to the varnish and almost no wear whatsoever, the text clean and solid and fresh. The jacket, which is quite scarce, is still very bright and attractive. The front and rear panels of the dustjacket are in quite excellent condition, bright, clean and complete, the spine panel shows a bit of evidence of shelving at the foot, and a bit of wear at the head, but this is a very pleasing and attractive copy of an important book. A FINE COPY IN SCARCE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET OF JOHN O’HARA’S FIRST BOOK. One of the Modern Library’s Top 100 books of the… Read More

Description:
Paris, Louis Janet, ca. 1825. Oblong 8vo (19.0 x 12.3 cm). iv, 146, [i] pp.; title page with large, engraved and finely hand-coloured vignette, 12 finely engraved, tissue-guarded plates with contemporary hand-colouring. Contemporary quarter polished calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt bands and title, and blind tooled vignettes. = A wonderfully preserved copy of a very rare, delightfully illustrated satire on human behaviour, humorously compared with the behaviour of monkeys. The author is unknown, and, given the satire hidden behind the jolly illustrations, perhaps wisely remained anonymous. However, it seems reasonable to assume that the publisher, [Pierre Claude] Louis Janet (1788-1840) was the author, as he was known as a writer, in particular of works published by himself. Former owner's name pencilled in an old hand on the front free endpaper recto. Some (mostly light) rubbing to the boards, occasional light, marginal thumbing, a few small smudges, but generally very clean. The… Read More

Description:
Washington, DC: National Intelligencer and Washington Advertiser, 1807. unbound. folio. unbound. (4), (4), (4), (4) pages. 4 issues. Four consecutive issues of what was, at the time, the official newspaper of the United States government, which published the proceedings and acts of the United States Congress. All four issues in near fine condition. It was edited by Samuel Smith, a loyal ally of Thomas Jefferson. Included in this set are the issues of March 18, 20, 23, and 25. Of special significance is the first printing of the prospectus, by Meriwether Lewis, of his journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-6). Also in the issue of March 18, preceding the prospectus, is a letter from Lewis warning the public of "several unauthorized and probably some spurious publications" about the expedition "by individuals entirely unknown to me (Lewis)." Lewis noted that permission to publish the journals was granted exclusively to Robert Frazier. Lewis's letter appears once again preceding the… Read More

"We ask but for Peace, Liberty, and Safety." [CONTINENTAL CONGRESS].
Newspaper. The Pennsylvania Gazette, January 18, 1775 (No. 2404). Philadelphia: David Hall and William Sellers. "Petition of the Continental Congress To the King's Most Excellent Majesty" (October 25, 1774). 4 pp., 10 x 16¼ in.Many members of the Continental Congress blamed the crisis between Great Britain and the North American colonies on acts of British governors, military officers, and ministers. On October 1, 1774, Congress resolved unanimously to prepare an address to the King, and appointed Chairman Richard Henry Lee, John Adams of Massachusetts, Thomas Johnson of Maryland, Patrick Henry of Virginia, and John Rutledge of South Carolina as a committee to draft the petition. On October 3, 4, and 5, Congress deliberated on the proper matters to include in the Petition, and Patrick Henry wrote a first draft. On October 21, Congress debated the first draft, asked for revisions, and added John Dickinson of Pennsylvania… Read More

Description:
New York: Butterick Publishing, 1910. First Edition. Hardcover. Minor rubbing to spine tips. Near Fine, lacking the impossibly scarce dustwrapper. Aside from his nearly impossible to obtain first book VENTURES INTO VERSE, this is Mencken's scarcest book. Though not published under his own name, Mencken wrote most if not all of the text. If you want to know Mencken's viewpoints on subjects such as the difference between mother's and cow's milk, there is no better, perhaps no other, place to turn. In a copy that sold at auction at Christies in 1995, Mencken inscribed the following: "I found Hirshberg. He prepared the material and I wrote the copy. More than 125,000 American mothers, using this invaluable text, have saved their brats from smallpox, arterio-sclerosis, poison-vol and delirium tremors. This has been my sole contribution to the salvation of humanity."
