Some of the most successful examples of the new breed of fighting man were the members of LRRPs - Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols - later known as the Army's 75th Rangers. Operating in six-man teams deep within enemy territory, they were the eyes and ears of the units they served. Their enemy body count often exceeded that of a much larger combat units. The LRRPs - characterized by perseverance under extreme hardship, extraordinary attention to detail, absolute profess ionalism, and uncommon bravery - may well have been the most effective use of manpower in the entire war.
