About This Item

London: George Allen & Company, Ltd,, 1913. The birth of psychoanalysis First edition in English, first impression, British issue. "This is unquestionably Freud's greatest single work. It contains all the basic components of psychoanalytic theory and practice; the erotic nature of dreams, the 'Oedipus complex', the libido, and the rest; all related to the background of the 'unconscious', later to be called the 'sub-conscious'" (PMM). First published in 1899, Die Traumdeutung was introduced to the English-speaking world via this translation - published simultaneously in London and New York - which was based on the third German edition of 1911. This copy retains the publisher's slip declaring that sales of this work are restricted to the "Medical, Scholastic, Legal, and Clerical professions". Octavo. Original blue horizontal-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Housed in a custom blue cloth solander box. Several diagrams within text. Publisher's slip tipped in before front free endpaper, erratum slip tipped in before p. 1. Bookseller's label on front pastedown of H. K. Lewis & Co. of London, active 1844-1989 and specializing in scientific books. Extremities rubbed, spine toned, ends bumped, corners a little worn, marks to rear cover, inner hinges a little tender, endpapers browned, contents clean: a very good copy. Grinstein 227. See Printing and the Mind of Man 389 for the German edition.

Synopsis

The Interpretation of Dreams is a book by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. The first edition was first published in German in November 1899 as Die Traumdeutung (though post-dated as 1900 by the publisher). The publication inaugurated the theory of Freudian dream analysis, which activity Freud famously described as "the royal road to the understanding of unconscious mental processes".
