Introduction to the Prophets: Their Stories, Sayings, and Scrolls by Leclerc, Thomas L - 2007

This book considers not only each of the prophetic books in the Hebrew Bible but also the prophets in the Pentateuch and the historical books. Also highlighted is an often-neglected aspect of the prophets' role, namely, their ministry as intercessors for the people, as mediators with God.

Prophets are divine spokesmen, with a message for a particular place and time. Important prophetic texts are analyzed in detail. Attention is given to traditions of Israel, used by each prophet. An extensive comparision is provided with literature from Israel's neighbors, especially comparable prophetic utterances. Teachings and stories of the prophets are represented in post-biblical literary and artistic traditions. The author provides commentary on passages quoted in lectionaries, Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. Finally, helpful charts and illustrations are included.

The author, Father Thomas L. Leclerc, M.S., is a a priest of the Missionaries of LaSalette. He holds a doctorate of theology in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from Harvard University. He is an associate professor of scripture at Emmanuel College in Boston.
