Albany: Barber & Southwick. Good. 1793. First American Edition. Hardcover. Authored by John Brown of Haddington, Scotland (1722-1787). This is the first American edition, and one of the earliest works by these two important Albany, NY publishers & printers: John Barber and Solomon Southwick. Their shop was located "two doors below the Dutch Church on the north side of State St. , Albany, NY." Shouthwick removed to Albany from Rhode Island in 1792 and soon after went into business with Barber as a publisher and printer at the "Albany Register." This copy in the original full calf leather covers which are worn. The front cover is warped and the text is age toned with some foxing. New endpapers. One leaf with a small marginal tear with some text loss in the introduction; a few worm holes to margin of last few leaves with no text loss. Title page has old owner name which has been partially eradicated with some rubbing to word "introduction. " Also two other very faint old names on title. Contains a printer's advertisement on p. 262 (the last page which is not numbered). Ref: Evans 25231, Not in Sabin ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 261 pages .
