Paris: Chez M. Gobert, 1618.. [13],232pp. plus four folding maps and four folding plates. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on backstrip. "E" signature supplied from another copy. Quite clean and neat internally. A lovely, near fine copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. Famed philosopher John Locke's copy, with his ink ownership inscription on the front pastedown. In front of his signature Locke has made the notation "b" which, according to THE LIBRARY OF JOHN LOCKE by Harrison and Laslett, was an inventory mark put into books in or about 1697 and not to be found in any books acquired after that date. Locke has noted at the foot of the titlepage that this is a duplicate copy. ^The rare first Paris edition. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition was the third complete circumnavigation, after Magellan in 1519 and Drake in 1577. The expedition was the first to round Cape Horn from the east, naming the Cape after the Dutch town of Hoorn, whose aggressive traders sponsored the voyage. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. Principle among the merchant benefactors of Hoorn was Isaac Le Maire, whose son, Jacob Le Maire, was charged as the director of the enterprise, and for whom the Le Maire strait is named. "Partly inspired by Quiros and motivated by Dutch trading zeal, this [voyage] was the essential precursor to Tasman's voyage; indeed Tasman made great use of Le Maire's mapping of the ocean. The Le Maire voyage, the last of the seventeenth century expeditions to search for the unknown continent from the east, was responsible for extensive discoveries in the Pacific..." - Hordern House. ^This edition contains four maps and four plates. They are: a map of the world in two hemispheres with surrounding portraits; a map of Tierra del Fuego; a map of the South Sea; a plate of a Polynesian sailing a canoe; a plate bearing the inscription, "Isle de Cocos"; a plate bearing the inscription, "Isle de Hoorn"; a plate of the "Indian kings" and their village; and a map of Nova Guinea. This copy has the pagination errors on pages 56, 215, and 179, not found in all copies. ^Schouten's work was originally published in Amsterdam in 1618 by Willem Jansz Blaeu. Though printed in his name, Schouten was most likely not the author of the present work, and it was probably compiled for him by Blaeu from the ships' logs. The work proved exceedingly popular, "no fewer than thirty- eight editions of the work were printed in Holland alone between the year 1618 and 1766" (Church). This is the first Paris edition. A fundamental voyage in worldwide navigation. SABIN 77952. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 618/119. PALAU 305104 (Paris 1619 ed) TIELE-MULLER 42n.

Description:
Frankfurt: Blaeu, 1619. Scarce copper engraved map of the northwest coastline of New Guinea and Moluccas, showing the track of the Dutch explorers Le Maire and Schouten in 1616, in the ships Eendracht and Hoorn. The two explorers made the third complete circumnavigation and were the first to round Cape Horn from the east, a more efficient way to get to the East Indies and thus a significant threat to the monopoly held by the Dutch East India Company. The expedition was headed for Batavia, which it reached in October of 1616. The Dutch governor there obliged them by confiscating their cargo and sending them back to Holland, but Schouten published his journals and now the word on the Drake Passage was out. With title cartouche in Dutch, Latin and French. With two compass rose and sailing ship. From Schouten's account of his and Le Maire's first rounding of Cape Horn. Slightly toned, otherwise very good condition.

Description:
Without titlepage (that has a portrait of the author on the back side), but the colophon states: Amsterdam, Ian Iacobsz Bouman, 1651, 8vo., half parchment and marbled paper binding, 56 pp., illustrated with 4 small woodcuts in the text and 6 double paged illustrations outside the collation. These illustrations are pasted in and all but one are woodcuts. The one between page 38 and 39 doensn't seem to belong in this book. It is an etching instead of a woodcut and small tears are diguised with snippets of another print (not the print that should be there). This edition of 1651 is not mentioned in STCN or WorldCat, but was found in the collection of the Maritiem Museum. The print that is missing in our copy is discussed on maritiemdigitaal.nl (Hoornse Eylandt). The book has some smudged pages with greyish stains, but the woodcuts are beautiful and the bookblock solid without any torn pages. Very rare edition of the marvellous journey by Schouten. 71 pages with two fold-out maps, one fold-out plan, and four fold-out views. Octavo (8" x 6 1/4") bound in vellum like material with hand lettering to spine. (Sabin 77961) Third Vlasblom edition of Schouten's diary. This account of Schouten's voyage was first printed in Dutch in 1617. All editions of great rarity.Willem Schouten, Dutch explorer whose 1615–16 expedition discovered a new route, the Drake Passage, around the southern tip of South America, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific.
The Dutch East India Company held a monopoly on all East Indies trade by ships routed through the Strait of Magellan when, in 1615, an Amsterdam merchant, Isaac Le Maire, mounted an expedition to find a new route to the Pacific. His son Jakob and veteran sea captain Schouten led the voyage that set sail in May 1615 with two ships—the second piloted by Schouten's brother Jan. By December they reached the far southeastern coast of South America, where the smaller ship caught fire and had to be abandoned.… Read More

[1], 35, [20] pp.Second German edition, the first with De BryÂ’s important illustrations, of part 11 of SchoutenÂ’s journals, published in Frankfurt only one year after Willem Jansz. Blaeu published the first Dutch edition at Amsterdam. Willem Cornelisz Schouten was a Dutch explorer born in Hoorn, Holland around 1567. In 1615, he and his younger brother Jan Schouten set sail on an expedition sponsored by the Australische Compagnie and led by Jacob Le Maire. The expedition, which consisted of two ships, the Eendracht and Hoorn, aimed to search for Terra Australis and explore a western route to the Pacific Ocean to bypass the trade restrictions of the Dutch East India Company in the Spice Islands.During the voyage, Schouten rounded Cape Horn, which he named after the lost ship Hoorn and the Dutch city of Hoorn, and named the strait Le Maire Strait. Jan Schouten died during the voyage and Willem Schouten continued, discovering several atolls in the Tuamotu Islands and the Tonga Islands, as well as the… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
