This unique copy bears a chain of inscriptions as it is passed between a chain of a number of Iowa soldiers beginning with the commanding Lt. Col. of the 47th Iowa Infantry, James P. Sanford (also known as one of the great American travelers of his era), dated 1866; from Sanford to Captain K. W. Brown in 1876; then to T. J. Miller in 1915, then S.W. Gossard in 1918, then to J. L. McLaren in 1925. First edition. A fair copy in the original plum stamped in gilt (heavy wear to cloth, rear cover heavily stained; some staining to rear endpapers).
