About This Item

New York: Harper and Brothers Publishing, 1940. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Very nice one poem book. in near fine condition with one tiny chip in spine. Book plate of Thomas Caldecott Chubb, ( The Chubb family started Chubb insurance Co. and Thomas was also a prominent author at the turn of the century) neatly on front paste down. Millay was a very ardent supporter of England and France in the war effort against the Nazi regine. This book was written in 1940, the early part of WWII. The title refers to a comment made by the German Chancellor ( Hitler) and aimed at European isolationists. The lines of the poem were " written in Passion and in Deep Concern for England, France and My Own Country" ( America) This poem " ... has been written and printed with no royalties for the author and no profit for the publisher... all proceeds will be turned over to an established war relief agency." This poem may be Millay's most passionate political work. Very fine collectible and thought provoking work.
