About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1984. Third Printing [stated]. Trade paperback. Very good/No dust jacket issued. 320, [2] pages. Maps. Footnote. Index. Cover has minor wear and soiling. The authors were two of Israel's most respected and honored journalists; this is an account of the origins, conduct, and quagmire of the aftermath of the Lebanon war of 1982. Ze'ev Schiff (1 July 1932 in Lille, France - 19 June 2007 in Tel Aviv, Israel) was an Israeli journalist and military correspondent for Haaretz. Schiff moved to Mandatory Palestine with his family in 1935. He studied Middle Eastern affairs and military history at Tel Aviv University. Schiff wrote numerous books, including Israel's Lebanon War and Intifada, both with Ehud Ya'ari, and A History of the Israeli Army: 1874 to the Present. He also served as a military correspondent in Vietnam, the Soviet Union, Cyprus and Ethiopia. Schiff won several prizes, including the Sokolov Journalism Prize, the Amos Lev Prize, and the Sarah Reichenstein Prize. He joined the Haaretz staff in 1955 and became senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in 1984. He was the chairman of the Military Writers Association, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and an Isaac and Mildred Brochstein Fellow in Peace and Security at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. Ehud Yaari (born 1 March 1945) is an Israeli journalist, author, television personality and political commentator. Ehud Yaari is an expert on Middle Eastern affairs. He is the author of eight books on the Arab-Israeli conflict, some in collaboration with Ze'ev Schiff. The book covers mainly the Israeli point of view, but its scope is wide and provides insight into the intricate workings and components of the Lebanese-Israeli-Palestinian interactions, as well as the internal aspects of Lebanese and Israeli politics relevant to the issues discussed. The book provides a most interesting and readable coverage of the Israeli military operation, and the behind the scenes planning and intrigue of this operation. Notable is the coverage of the deception used by the Israeli Minister of Defense, Ariel Sharon and Chief of Staff, Rafael Eitan in order to pull the wool over the eyes of the Israeli Prime Minister, Knesset and public. Quite astounding, considering the fact that these events took place in a democratic country. This book is a must for anyone who seeks to understand or research the subject.
