Massive quarto hardcover in pale blue cloth stamped in gilt. 440 pp. with index of violin makers according to the places of their occupation. Profusely illustrated with 383 photographs comprising nearly 1800 of the instruments plus additional photos of labels and makers marks and an additional section of XXXII pp. of diagrams of measurement details of various instruments. A tight copy, some fading to the egdes of the cloth and two small stains bottom edge front cover; the final 32-page section of diagram illustrations has some dampstaining long the bottom margins, In original dust jacket, some staining and two small blank labels affixed to the bottom and corner edges of the front panel. Massive, authoritative list of 1855 Italian violin an lute makers with a complete history of the subject, the work of various schools of makers, violin makers themselves presented against their traditional and cultural backgrounds. Inaddition to the photographs are many precise measurements and blueprints.
