Binding: Fair to acceptable, loose on inside hinge with break, please see photo.

Text/pages: Yellow discoloration to the pages throughout this volume. Some notes in opening leaves but text appears to be clear. Gold Gilt to top, side and bottom. Many good quality picture plates in this volume.

Overall: This looks like a copy that has possibly been rebound, it's a shame that the top spine has some damage, otherwise the book generally feels and looks very deluxe.

The author George Orwell summed up Reade's attraction as "the same charm as one finds in R. Austin Freeman's detective stories or Lieutenant-Commander Gould's collections of curiosities—the charm of useless knowledge," meeeoww!

Non-the less... Reade was a populer writter of time...

About Squeeze Gut Alley Rare Books

Hi welcome to Squeeze Gut Alley Rare Books, my name is Paul Crame. I find, clean-up and conserve; interesting, unique and sometimes even rare books! So that they can continue to give new pleasure for many more years to come. I work in an academic library full-time and run Squeeze Gut on the side as part collector, part hobbyist, part dealer... Yes, I am basically a full-time suffering obsessive bibliophile. FAQ: Squeeze Gut Alley? That's a strange name for a bookshop? Ans: I was inspired by one of the many fisherman alleys pictured to the right >> in my home town of Whitstable, Kent, UK. Squeeze Gut Alley (a particularly narrow passage) was once (apparently) used as an escape route from the local policeman. Until one day... the rather rotund village policeman decided to chase a very naughty boy down the alley, and got his very large Capital Gut stuck in the narrow passageway! The name stuck and so did his Gut.
