About This Item

Bantam Press, London, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Illustrator: Photographic / Illustrations. Editor's preface, foreword by Richard Whittington-Egan, authors' preface, Introduction: psychological portrait of Jack the Ripper, two appendices, bibliography and index. Between pages 148 and 149 there are eight pages of black-and-white photographs and reproductions of newspapers; and within the text there is the occasional map and diagram. Black coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper with yellow, red and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. A book about the the most notorious serial killer in Victorian England (and incidentally the acknowledged first modern serial killer) Jack the Ripper. The book starts with what is actually known about the squalid environment that the victims inhabited; and victims themselves – identities, last time seen etc., the escalating mutilations; and of Jack the Ripper himself (? herself). Then " ... the authors give a complete and vivid account of the theories that began to appear even before the murders were over, and that have poured out ever since: the barrister, the mad doctors, the insane Royal Prince, the ritual murder theory, the notion that the Ripper might be a woman. Every explanation worth considering, however bizarre, is given a fair hearing ... " – from front fold over panel blurb. The little rubbing of the book edges and panels with a little age toning of the text block edges and pages. Tape residue can be seen to the end pages. Minor rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [6], VII - XII, 318, [6] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
