About This Item

Portland, OR: L. Samuel Publisher, West Shore Lithographing & Engraving Co.], 122 Front St., cor. Washington, August, 1883. 4to. [4], 171-196, [4] pp. With 10 plates, woodcut-engraved illustrated ads, text illustrations. Illustrated printed softcovers on pink-coloured paper, woodcut illustrated vignette on front cover, illustrated ads recto & verso of front & back covers (minor tears & chewing to upper right corner in blank margin, not affecting text or images, minor sunning, light creasing), still VG- copy. First edition of this issue of the well-illustrated land promotion magazine for Oregon, and the Washington Territory, whose primary purpose was to urge the vision that the Pacific Northwest was a rapidly growing and prosperous Eden. The magazine was noted for its high quality lithographic scenic views first introduced in 1878, and in 1885 were still issued in a large 4to. format, rather than the 8vo. Harper Magazine style format begun in 1887. The lithographs in this issue include views of Jacksonville, OR, Ashland, Oregon, the business district of Ashland, and many views in and around Vancouver, Washington Territory. Of additional interest is an article promoting the newly released 1883 “Map of Portland” offered for sale at McKeercher & Thompson, executed by Marye, and the engraving and printing executed by A.G. Walling with the engraving plate destroyed after 1000 copies printed.
