About This Item
Fribourg: Office Du Livre, 1977 4to (31.5 cm), 608 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear). The illuminated manuscripts at Waddesdon Manor, largely undiscovered and unpublished, constitute only a third of the magnificent collection initiated by Baron James Mayer de Rothschild (d. 1868) and expanded by his son Baron Edmond (1845-1934). Many of these manuscripts represent the finest works of significant publishing houses and workshops from the later Middle Ages, with some valued for their texts and others for the opulence of their illumination. This catalogue signifies a reorientation in the study of manuscripts, presenting descriptions organized to emphasize the history of the medieval book. The components of the manuscripts - technical elements, texts, and their illustrations - are analyzed in the sequence in which they were produced. The commentaries accompanying each description seek to interpret the manuscripts, introducing the less specialized reader to this often-overlooked aspect of artistic production and social life in the Middle Ages.
