Cincinnati, OH: J. A. and U. P. James. Very Good. 1851. Hardcover. Traveler's guide focused on the waterways of the then-American West. Includes descriptions of the rivers and lakes, nearby communities, steamship routes, and railroads. With two fold-out maps, one of the Mississippi, and the other with the Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio Rivers. Maps are simply drawn with the outline of the river and towns along the banks, and are somewhat unusual in that they are a negative image with a fully-inked background. Brown cloth boards are blind-stamped with gilt text on spine, some rubbing to edges and bumped corners. A bit of foxing to edges of text block with surprisingly little on the inside.; Book; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall .
