US: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1929. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. Ralph B. Wilkins. First edition of novel by Albert Bigelow Paine, published anonymously (second edition published under his name). VG-/no DJ. Corners and spine bumped, rubbed, small white mark on front cover, prev. owner's bookplate on inside front cover, pencil notation on back fep, very slightly cocked. Pages slightly age-coloured. Albert Bigelow Paine (1861-1937) is best known for his biography of Mark Twain, but also wrote biographies, several travel books, and novels. He lived in France for several years and was awarded the Legion of Honour for his historical novels on Joan of Arc. "Jan the Romantic" is also set in France, but in the early 20th century, ending after WWI. The story of a poor but noble boy who finds romance with the beautiful Zilda - "trailing clouds of glory". 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
