London: Bulmer, 1792. Very good condition. Rich and intensely hand colored etched, stipple and line engraved plate of grosbeak standing on a small branch, facing to the left, with bright red beak, blue and black body feathers and pale pink breast.
"One of the most famous, early coloured illustrations of ornithology" (Wood). "Hayes was the first author systematically to record a single private collection of live birds; such a project was not attempted again until 1846" (Jackson, Bird Etchings, p.135). This image appeared in "Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds from the Menagery of Osterly Park". 9 x 11 1/2". Exquisitely executed print.
