About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1914. Near fine.. First edition, third issue of this gloriously Golden Age Mother Goose, one of Jessie Willcox Smith's best-loved works. Jessie Willcox Smith's beautiful illustrations of various Mother Goose rhymes were originally published in monotone in the pages of GOOD HOUSEKEEPING - THE JESSIE WILLCOX SMITH MOTHER GOOSE is the first time they were seen in color, with an original illustration on the cover. Nudelman notes the cover piece, showing two children nestled under the wings of Mother Goose's wings, as "one of Smith's most pleasing and warm images" (38). A Golden Age beauty in lovely condition. 8.5'' x 11.25''. Original black cloth boards with color pictorial paste-on, with gilt elements and white spine lettering. Plain endpapers (Nudelman A39). Color pictorial frontispiece and 11 color plates, with five black-and-white plates and black-and-white line illustrations throughout. 174 pages. One tiny ink notation in table of contents. Binding with a touch of edgewear, white spine lettering largely intact, just a bit of rubbing to paste-on. Textblock with one tiny spot of soil. Frontispiece with paper repair along verso of fore-edge, one tiny glue repair. Sound and clean.
