About This Item

New York: Pitman Publishing Corporation, 1964. Second Edition. Hardcover. Good. xx, [2], 617, [1] pages. Illustrations. Figures. Problems. Index. Part of fep and half-title snipped off at top edge. A few marks to the text noted. Cover has wear, tears, soiling, and rubbed corners. This edition of Jet Propulsion has been extensively revised to incorporate advances in the field which have taken place over the preceding six years and to include new topics of nuclear propulsion and space propulsion. At least two developments in recent years graphically illustrate the need for these revisions--the nearly complete conversion of commercial air transportation to jet propulsion and the almost commonplace orbiting of manned satellites. Dr. Walter J. Hesse had been involved in high technology research and development for over 60 years. Dr. Hesse earned the BSME, MSME and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He studied at the U.S. Naval Academy where he was commissioned Ensign (1944), USNR; attended U.S.N. Submarine Officers School; University of California, Nuclear Engineering; and Sandia National Laboratories, Nuclear Weapons. During World War II, he served as an assistant engineer on board the submarine U.S.S. Blenny. From 1949 to 1955, he was Chief Engineer and Chief Academic Instructor at the Test Pilot School, U.S. Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River, Maryland, where four of the original seven astronauts were his students. Dr. Hesse served as Vice President of Chance Vought Aircraft Corporation from 1956-1973. Dr. Hesse published more than 100 technical papers and authored two college textbooks in the field of jet propulsion.
