Haarlem: International Olympic Committee (Printed by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen), 1928. First Edition. Softcover. Near fine. Jos Rovers and Jan Wijga. 1928 IXe OLYMPIADE AMSTERDAM [cover title]. [1927 or 1928]. 38,[10] pp. including numerous in-text illustrations, plus wrappers printed recto and verso and [4]-page bifolium laid in containing two color plans. In French. Original pictorial color wrappers. Light wear, corner crease in upper corner of rear wrapper, else near fine.
An rare guide to the 1928 Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam, with striking color lithographic covers. The front cover, by Jos Rovers, prints the IX Olympiade's official poster design featuring a runner near a coliseum, a Greek column, and an Olympic flag. The International Olympic Committee never ultimately received copyright to the image, which may account in part for the scarcity of this publication. The rear cover, designed by Jan Wijga, shows a worker's arm holding up a gear before the Dutch colors, advertising the 1928 Industrial Exposition in Rotterdam. The program's contents include lists of officials and dignitaries, comments by IOC President Comte de Baillet-Latour, a description of the Olympic stadium, and various additional articles, plans, and photographic illustrations. The removable pamphlet includes a color plan of "Amsterdam et ses environs," a folding color plan of Amsterdam proper, and a program for the 1928 Winter Olympics at St. Moritz, which had taken place earlier that year. The guide was produced by Joh. Enschedé and Sons, one of Holland's oldest and most prestigious printing firms. OCLC records one copy, at the International Olympic Committee Library in Switzerland.
