Short tears, few small nicks, slight rubbing and browning to jacket (chiefly to lower edges); slight internal browning to edges and endpapers. viii, [2], 470 pages. Novel in which the eponymous hero survives an ill-fated raid on Vermont territory and a Canadian prisoner-of-war camp to return to his native Oldham County, North Carolina. Signed and inscribed by Fowler in dark blue ink on front free endpaper: 'To Anne Edwards with admiration + affection to a gifted lady, Bob Fowler. 1/24/78'. With 'First Edition' and number line ending in '1' on title page verso.1 b/w Map (double-page).
