About This Item

Geneva: Patrick Cramer, 2002 (Alan Wofsy Fine Arts distribution). Laminated boards. 22 x 31cm. 200pp. 108 reproductions including 50 in colors,... The livre d’artiste A toute épreuve, was a collaboration between the poet Paul Éluard (1895-1952), the artist Joan Miró (1893-1983) and the publisher Gérald Cramer (1917-1991) over the course of a decade (1948-1958). Cramer and Miró continued their collaboration on other books and gallery shows and this publication includes the letters from Miró to Cramer on these other project until 1980. Paul Eluard and the Genevoise publisher Gérald Cramer met in 1945. Eluard offered him A toute épreuve, a painful memory of his break with Gala, who left him for Dali. He also offered him his old friend Joan Miró, who could illustrate his poems, with whom Gérald Cramer immediately made contact. From this meeting through letters, one of the great adventures of Western illustration was born. From 1947, for the needs of the company, contacts multiplied between the artist and the publisher: meetings, telephone interviews, telegrams, exhibitions ... and letters. This correspondence, which lasts almost thirty-five years, remains one of the tangible signs of this fruitful relationship. Miró's hundreds of letters, cards, etc. are reproduced, transcribed and commented on...
