First printing Very good in dark green cloth covered boards with faded gilt text stamping on the spin with bright gilt text stamping on the front board. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is rubbed and worn. Missing the first free end page and the second free end page has a prior owner's name and date at its upper fore corner. Without the extremely scarce issued dust jacket.. 343 pages of text and illustrated with a frontispiece from a painting and with seven plates which lack page numbers. This state contains the blank leaf following page 343. (BAL, 11946; Sisson, p72; Woodbridge/London/Tweney, 113)
