Inscribed and SIGNED by the AUTHOR on ffep. "To Roger and Christina Stevens / With admiration and / warm friendship / Tazewell Shepard" Introduction by Edward M. Kennedy. THE AUTHOR: Tazewell T. Shepard Jr. , a retired two-star Navy rear admiral who was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism in World War II. Adm. Shepard received the Navy Cross, the highest naval award for heroism after the Medal of Honor, for bravery during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942. Adm. Shepard served as naval aide to President John F. Kennedy at the White House from 1961 to 1963. He was responsible for "the manning, the care - everything - about Camp David and the yachts. " He also advised Kennedy during the Bay of Pigs crisis in 1961. Adm. Shepard earned two master's degrees, one in strategic warfare and another in nuclear engineering. He commanded an anti-submarine warfare group during the Vietnam War and was deputy director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the late 1960s. He later held a top Defense Department administrative post in Asia before his military retirement in 1973. PROVENANCE: Roger Lacey Stevens (1910 - 1998) was an American theatrical producer, arts administrator, and real estate executive. He was the founding Chairman of both the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (1961) and the National Endowment for the Arts (1965) . In politics, he made a mark as chairman of the Democratic Party's finance committee in 1956. Christine Gesell Stevens (1918 - 2002) was an American animal welfare activist and conservationist. Stevens founded the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) in 1951 and the Society for Animal Protective Legislation (SAPL) in 1955. ; Signed by Author .; Americana and American History, Signed and Association Copies, Most Recent Listing .

At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years. Over those many years we have taken great pleasure from satisfying our customers' eclectic literary requirements in the shop and hope to continue in that tradition now that we have moved our operation on-line.Currently, our catalogued inventory includes about 4,000 books from the sixteenth century through the twentieth century in a variety of subject areas. Our stock comprises antiquarian books, collectible books and scholarly books, as well as a selection of antique prints and ephemera.The books listed here represent only a small portion of our total inventory.
