New York: Hurd and Houghton [Riverside Press], 1867. Hardcover. Good+. H. W. [Henry Walker] Herrick. Boards in original brown cloth with decorative gilt stamped spine. Fraying to head of spine. Interior is unmarked. Some scattered soiling to pages. Three engraved plate illustrations by H. W. Herrick (including frontispiece). 192 pages. Volume II (''Spring'') of the John Gay series. The series was published in four volumes, one for each of the seasons. Written for boys, the stories suggest practical and pleasing occupations. In this volume, ''Work for Spring,'' the primary focus is on woodworking and simple carpentry. In it, John encounters a local carpenter and becomes his indentured apprentice. The author, Jacob Abbott (1803-1879), was an American educator and writer of children's books. Early in his career, he taught at Amherst College and in 1829 became the founder and first principal of Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston. Through the course of career, he authored more than 180 books for young people.
