Boston, July 7, 1783, original Draft Manuscript Letter from John Hancock to the General Courts, with autograph docketing of "Message to General Court July 7, 1783". 1p., 8" x 13". Overall very good; some loss along two inches of one fold. Sold at Early American Auctionsfor $3,368 in 10-22-06. Ex. Sigety, Ex Christies. "Gentlemen of the Senate & Gentlemen of the House of Representatives -- I have received a letter from the President of Congress Inclosing Copies of five Letters and other Papers Relative to the Violation of the Laws of Nations and Rights of Neutrality Alledged to have been Committed by Church & Haden Requesting that Inquiry may be made into this matter & such measures taken as may be most Effectual for procuring Satisfaction for the Injury done, as it is not in my Power to do that which is Requisite upon this occasion with only your aid I have directed the Secretary to lay these Papers before you & Doubt not you will take such order there upon as shall appear to you necessary for the Preservation of the Honor of the State & procuring Satisfaction for the Injury done, as is alledged & the flag of His Catholic Majesty."
