London: Bradbury, Agnew, & Co.. 1886 and 1887. hb. Very large 4to, pp.284,276,268 Taken from issues of "Punch" magazine published between 1842 to 1864. . The complete set of three volumes, bound as one in black three-quarter leather over greyish cloth. This is not a recent re-bind, but it is not contemporary: it appears to have been done about 50 years ago, and competently done at that, with the spine in compartments, showing five blind-stamped florettes and gilt lettering. The binding is still in quite good condition, showing only moderate wear. The contents are tightly-bound and in very good condition with only the odd bit of marginal smudging. This is a large, heavy, book and it might be best to enquire, first, as to costs and options to ship. .

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
