Publisher's full red cloth heavily embossed with gilt illustrations and lettering on front cover, a.e.g., patterned green floral endpapers, rebacked with a matching red cloth spine. The original spine is laid in, in rear. Profusely illustrated with b&w cartoons by John Leech, several per page, spanning the years he worked for Punch. . Front hinge is starting, some droplet marks and rubbing to both covers, front endpaper torn near the spine rubbing to edges of book with some fraying to the fore-edges, p. 9 has been repaired with tape at the bottom edge and is chipped along the fore-edge, p. 13 has a 2" tear at the fore-edge which affects 2 comic panels, heavy thumbing to most of the book but it is almost all confined to the margins and affects only a handfull of the comic panels. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period.
