1878. HOLMES, Oliver Wendell. JOHN LOTHROP MOTLEY. A Memoir. English Copyright Edition. London: Trubner & Co., 1878. First edition, preceeding the American edition by a few weeks. 8vo.: xi, 275 pp. Brown cloth, gilt imprint to spine in state B, with a short hyphen-like dash below the o in Co.; no precedence is given between states A and B. Brown coated endpapers. Ex library; bookplate to front pastedown, but no other marks. Internally, this is a clean and fresh copy. Cloth shows some very light soiling at sides. Spine is slightly skewed and darkened, with a touch of wear at crown, and the upper hinge has a hairline crack. Overall, this copy is crisp and solid, in near-fine condition. (BAL 8928; Tilton p. 173.).
