New York: Harper and Brothers, 1863. First American Edition. Octavo. First issue with the word "about" repeated twice on page 314. Francis or Franny was from a theatrical family. She followed in their footsteps soon traveling to the US for a two-year theater tour. She was well received with many fans including a man named Pierce Butler, grandson of Major Butler who owned 638 slaves and was one of the wealthiest men in the United States. Fanny was not fond of slavery and ended her marriage in divorce. This is her story, the most-detailed look at plantation slavery ever recorded by a white northern abolitionist. Bound in publisher's brown embossed cloth, spine lettering gilt some fraying to spine ends and corners, two previous owner's bookplates (Charles E. d'Autremont, Jr.1855-1919 and Samuel Throth) and one other name.
