"The Newman of the popular imagination is the Newman of later years: the defender of his faith in the Apologia pro Vita Sua; the Dean of English converts; the saintly old man in the robes of a cardinal. When he died in 1890 his name was already a legend, and the legend has endured because his effect on his time has been surpassed by his legacy to generations that followed. The reforming movement that he had once helped to inaugurate in the English Church did not end with his separation from it. His justification in the Apologia of his final beliefs pleaded the case for all English converts, improved their position and increased their numbers. His opposition of an intelligent intellectual freedom in religious study, which brought him into conflict with individuals in the Roman Catholic hierarchy, have survived him in their influence on Catholic thinking...." - Foreword from Journey into Faith:The Anglican Life Of John Henry Newman
