Worn but sound copy with a folding map, four engraved plates of coins, and an additional folding tipped on page with three figures or plates, additional engravings throughout the text. Three quarter 17th or early 18th century smooth brown leather over marbled boards, all edges marbled, 12" tall, [11], errata, plates, 1-483 pages. Covers worn, spine heavily worn and chipped, front cover through first few pages of preface detached, text block otherwise sound, occasional neat underlining in red throughout text, old hinge repairs, old professional repair to lower corner of folding page of plates, good old repair to long tear in map, unrepaired 4" closed tear to map with no paper loss, occasional foxing and finger soil. Includes 1837 inscription from Rev. C. G. Wheler, M.A., Durham to James Stuart Menteath, Esq. [his grandson, 1792-1870] on the verso of the preliminary blank, and a 1906 inscription on the recto, to "Thomas Humfry Vines, this book written by his ancestor Sir George Wheler, from his cousin C. Granville Stuart Menteth with kind regards & good wishes". Includes an envelope from the Burmah Oil Co., Ltd. addressed to Vines in Karachi.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
