First American edition of this medical memoir in which the Hungarian author describes with vivid equanimity the symptoms caused by a brain tumor, as well as its ultimate removal via surgery. Translated from the Hungarian by Vernon Duckworth Barker. First edition. Octavo, 8 1/8 x 5 5/8 in. 288pp. Blue cloth boards; blue and gold paper spine label; in dust jacket. Front free end paper excised (stub remains). A few spots of internal foxing to prelims, three tiny spots to textblock edges. Unclipped ("$2.50") jacket with ~1/4" bands of loss at spine ends, chips at tips, creases and edge-tears. A very good copy, sturdy and clean in a good (+), mostly complete jacket.

Synopsis

Frigyes Karinthy (1887—1938) was a Hungarian author, playwright, poet, journalist, and translator. He was the first proponent of the six degrees of separation concept in his 1929 short story, L‡ncszemek ( Chains ). Karinthy is known in English for his novellas Voyage to Faremido and Capillaria . Father of Ferenc Karinthy, he remains one Hungary’s most popular writers. Oliver Sacks practices neurology in New York City. His books include Awakenings , Uncle Tungsten , and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat .
