In the foreword he writes, "'Journeys of the Dead" is a sort of dreamed autobiography, by which I mean that the things I have seen, heard, or lived through, the people I have quarrelled with or loved during the course of my existence, have reappeared, and revealed themselves to me, in my dreams.
