About This Item
Palo Alto, CA:: The Wilderness Society and American West Publishing Co,, (1973). Hardcover first edition -. Fine in dark blue cloth in a near fine dust jacket. (some toning to the spine of the dj). First printing. A first-hand description of the Arctic - as it was and as it is - by a naturalist whose adventures there spanned 47 years. Murie took his first field trip to the Hudson Bay region in 1914, observing the land and the wildlife, and learning the ways of the peoples of the North. Later expeditions took him to Labrador and many parts of Alaska. What he saw and felt on these travels was recorded in the sketchbook and journal that were always tucked away in his pocket. Edited and with a preface by Margaret E. Murie, who shared her husband's love of the Arctic and many of his experiences there. They worked closely together to protect the pristine Brooks Range and the Sheenjek River Valley, and their hard work played a major role in the establishment of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Illustrated with Murie's photographs. Pronunciation guide, glossary, index. 255 pp.
