About This Item
[Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo] Manuscript for Possibly Unpublished Essay "Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo--Discoverer of California" Plus Notes and Additional Cabrillo Related Manuscript Materials
Collection of approximately 80 pages of typed and written manuscript sheets. Light toning and evidence of use with scattered dog-eared pages, paperclip marks and light wear. Very Good Condition.
Archival collection in folder simply titled "Cabrillo, Juan Rodriguez" Likely a compilation put together by a collector of Cabrillo related material. The set consists of the following:
--Typed and written manuscript plus notes for "Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo: Discoverer of the Coast of California". The Book Club of California published a similar title by Henry Wagner but this appears to be a different essay, likely by California historian Marion Parks.
The finding aid for the papers of Marion Parks at the Claremont Colleges state: "Marion Parks, a talented and resourceful personality in Los Angeles during the early 1900s, relate to the history of Southern California. Parks described herself as "a California historian." Her principal contributions in this capacity were a series of still-useful booklets published while she was publicity writer for Security-First National Bank, and the organization of colorful historical pageants (in the Spanish style) in several California towns." This archive includes notes from Parks regarding the Cabrillo Pageant she helped organize.
--Typed and written manuscript plus notes for "From Columbus to Cabrillo" a lecture which is unsigned.
--Packet with manuscript title sheet, "Columbus to Cabrillo--Cabrillo Journal.
--Set of typed pages grouped together with title page "Preliminary Suggestions for a Pageant of the Landing of Cabrillo at San Pedro" prepared by Marion Parks--State Chairman of History Native Daughters of the Golden West for Rudecinda Parlor, N.D.G.W. San Pedro August 19, 1940."
--Stapled set of 5 pages with both typed pages (3) and mimeo (2) titled "Pageant of the Landing of Cabrillo" (Sunday, Oct. 11, 1936) Mr. George Hjelte, Narrator. Note: Reenactments of the landing of Cabrillo were semi-regular events up to at least 1986.
--Retained typed copy of "Voyage of Cabrillo" by Alexander S. Taylor with dedication page to Hon. William M. Gwin, Senator from California. Likely missing pages.
--Three items of ephemera related to Cabrillo including a 1938 letter regarding a movement to cause the name "Channel Islands" to be changed to "Cabrillo Islands" written by Edwin W. Widney of the Pacific Exposition Corporation to Mrs. Marion Parks.
A great little archive for the Cabrillo enthusiast including the manuscript for "Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo: Discoverer of the Coast of California
