Julian Shakespeare Carr (1845-1924) was one of North Carolina's most prominent industrialists and philanthropists, in addition to being one of the most colorful characters in the history of the state. His aggressive international advertising campaign for Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco did more for the economic welfare of the state after the Civil War than did any other single factor. He became one of Durham's chief benefactor's, helping to establish schools, churches, railroads, mills, public utilities and libraries.-publisher.
