London, printed by T. Bensley, for Vernor and Hood, 1796.. Collected edition 1796, 2 volumes, complete set, 8vo, approximately 240 x 145 mm, 9¼ x 5½ inches, engraved additional title pages to each volume with vignette and dated 1797, 16 engraved portrait plates depicting famous political figures, including Edmund Burke, John Wilkes, Judge Blackstone, Lord Mansfield, the Duke of Grafton and George III, pages: (1), xl, (4), 325; (1), 366, including notes at rear of each volume and index at end of Volume II, wide margins, bound in full contemporary straight grained red morocco, gilt ruled border to covers, spine with 5 double raised bands with gilt rules and bands, lettered gilt, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles (turn ins), marbled endpapers. Spines faded, head and tail of spines slightly rubbed, a touch of rubbing to corners, one or two minor marks to covers, 2 tiny indentations on upper cover of Volume II, engraved title pages and most plates lightly foxed in the margins, contents otherwise clean, bindings tight and firm. A very good set. Junius was the pseudonym of the author of letters published in a London newspaper, The Public Advertiser, from January 1769 to January 1772, attacking George III and some of his ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, Sir William Draper and Lord Mansfield, for the harm he saw being inflicted on the constitution. He is thought by some to be Sir Philip Francis M. P. secretary to Lord Chatham. The first authorised collected edition was published in 1772 and was followed by numerous editions up to the 1850s. Lowndes, Bibliographer's Manual, Volume II, page 1240: "It is a work which must always preserve its high place among the classics of England; the author was a first-rate master of the art of rhetorical invective". Description:
London: Gale, Curtis and Fenner et al, 1813. Leather. Good. 11.5" by 9". Mr Edward Bocquet. A profusely illustrated edition of the well known critical letters regarding King George III's government. In a lovely crushed morocco binding. This work was penned by an anonymous polemicist and was published in two volumes in 1772. This is a collection of private and open letters as well as other letters in-reply from people to whom Junius had written between 1769 and 1772. The addresees of the letters include the Duke of Grafton, Edward Weston, Duke of Bedford, Zeno and more. Junius is a pseudonym for the unknown author of these letters. With ten plates. Collated, lacking 'Sir William Draper' and 'Duke of Grafton' plates. Junius' identity is a topic of great debate and may remain unsolved unless further evidence is found. Many scholars believe the identification may be that of Sir Philip Francis. Portraits to this work are by Mr Edward Bocquet, an historical engraver, after original… Read More

Description:
London: By T. Bensley, 1805. 2 volumes. First Edition Thus and a large paper copy with wide margins, a new edition of the revised version of the "Letters," with a dedication to the English people and a preface. With engraved titles and 21 stipple engraved portraits by Ridley, Hopwood and others, the tissue guards present. Tall 8vos, bound in maroon crushed morocco over cloth covered boards, the spines with blind ruled flat bands and two gilt lettered compartments, t.e.g. xxxi, 252; iii, 284 pp. A fine set. An elegant large paper edition of a classic. The "letters of Junius" were originally contributed to the London "Public Advertiser" from the 21st of January 1769 to the 21st of January 1772 and were intended to discredit the ministry of the duke of Grafton (although their political content is of little interest now, and indeed had little effect in their time). Their interest lies in their style and the controversy regarding their authorship. In the former they imitate Swift,… Read More

Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
