About This Item

London: T. Bensley. Good with no dust jacket. 1799 & 1818. Hardcover. 3 separate Volumes--two different works, and all bound in the same style of binding. The name of the person who authored the letters signed by "Junius" between 1769 and 1772 and printed in London's "Public Advertiser" has been the subject of much speculation. Many scholars believe the author was Francis Philip, but this has not been confirmed. Junius' letters are reproduced in these two volumes. Ths two volume set bound in green leather with five raised bands, top edges gilt. Each volume contains an extra illustrated title page that preceeds the standard title page. Each volume also contains an illustrated frontis portrait as well as several other portraits depicting the people to whom his letters were addressed. These letters informed Englishmen of their historical and constitutional rights and also pointed out how those rights had been infringed upon. This set "Printed by T. Bensley, for Vernor and Hood, J. Cuthell, Lackington, Allen, and Co. J. Walker, R. Faulder, Otridge and Son, and Ogilvy and Son." This set dated 1799 (the illustrated title pages are dated 1797). Pagination: vol. 1: 274 p.; vol. 2: 319 p. Also includes A THIRD VOLUME bound in the same way as the other two volumes; the third volume contains the work "The Identity of Junius, Including the Supplement, Consisting of Hand-writing and Other Illustrations." John Taylor and was published in London in 1818 by Taylor & Hessey. It is the 2nd edtion corrected and enlarged, 404 p. This volume is illustrated by a frontis portrait (there is no extra illustrated title page). There are also 5 folding facsimiles of handwriting. The author of the Junius letters is identified in this book as Francis Phillip. The front cover is detached, and the wear of this volume is like that of the other two. In this set: volume 1 of the "Letters" and the third volume "Identity of Junius" both have the front covers detached. There is wear to the spines and extremities. Each volume has marbled endpapers, and the top edges of all three are gilt. Previous owner bookplate on front end paper. The contents are clean, tight, and free of foxing and writing. Rebacking to restore the integrity of the bindings would be a viable option for this set. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo, 8"- 9" tall .
