About This Item

Fine condition; one vertical book-length crease on the front cover; some uncut pages indicate that the book has never been read.

Avant-garde minimalist constructivist book cover design by unidentified artist. Title page and each chapter are also designed in minimalist constructivsit style.

Book's author, leading figure of Latvian avant-garde literature, Linards Laicens (1883-1938) a staunch communist, in 1909-1911 imprisoned for revolutionary activities and editing illegal left-wing magazines. After release from the prison was under constant surveillance by the security services for having contact with illegal communist organizations. In 1929 he joined the Communist Party of Latvia (LCP) and published a collection of short stories "Prison cells" in which depicted social, political and philosophical problems of society. Artistically uneven prison-themed stories based on Laicens own life experiences and that's why of great cultural value.
