About This Item

Topeka, KS: L.F. Garlinghouse Co., [1956]. 4to. [2], 31, [3] pp. Numerous photo illustrations, blueprint floor designs, including the bound-in “Quick Service Order Blank.” Colour-illustrated softcovers, cover art of red-roofed rustic cabins & vacations homes around lake w/ canoe at the shoreline, red lettering (slight shelfwear, rubbing), still VG bright copy. First edition of this uncommon house plan book for the burgeoning vacation market in post-War America, produced by the Garlinghouse company. The small rustic cottages, some featuring sun porches, a couple log cabins, and others were one of the last house plan catalogues designed by Iva Gay Lieurance (1886-1956). She had begun working for Garlinghouse as an architectural designer in 1907, and was responsible for producing hundreds of designs adapting the Bungalow style for midwestern housewives. She also produced designs for Colonial homes, small bungalows, Sunshine homes, and finally by the early 1950s Split Level Ranch homes further adapting California to the Plains. Worldcat locates 5 copies (Columbia, Bancroft, U of MI, VA Tech, Historic Houses Trust, NSW); See: Popular Type of Kansas Bungalow developed by L.F. Garlinghouse, National Builder, Vol, 65, pp. 17-20; America takes bungalow and makes it home, Capital-Journal, April 18, 2004.
