About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux,, 1965. Verdict: excellent book by a genius who will do anything to attract attention" - Kurt Vonnegut First edition, first printing, of the author's first book, with a rare galley proof of an omitted chapter entitled "Therapy and Corned Beef While You Wait" loosely inserted. A pencil annotation on the upper margin reads "Omitted from Book, better than 4/5 of the stuff in the book!". Wolf approached Esquire magazine in 1963 about an article on the hot rod and custom car culture of southern California. He struggled with the piece, and his editor Byron Dobell asked him to type up his notes so that someone else could write it. Wolfe acquiesced, haphazardly compiling his notes into a letter the evening before the deadline. Dobell removed the salutation "Dear Byron" and published the letter as it was, under the title "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom! That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby". Its notoriety gained Wolfe enough fame to publish this title, a collection of his journalistic writings for, among others, the Herald-Tribune, Esquire, and Harper's Bazaar. Octavo. Original white cloth, spine lettered in gilt and ruled in yellow, front cover lettered and decorated in gilt on yellow ground, orange endpapers, top edge yellow. With dust jacket. 18 pp wire-stitched galley proof loosely inserted. Covers and edges lightly foxed. A near-fine copy in like jacket, top edges a touch creased, faint offsetting to flaps, sharp and clean.
